The new intermodal terminal at the port of Dunkirk is expected to become operational in March 2026. Its management has been entrusted to Delta Rail, a multimodal operator owned by Modalis. The facility, currently under construction, involves an investment of 25 million euros and covers an area of 9.6 hectares along the Loon railway connection, adjacent to the port's ro-ro terminals, which host ferry services to the UK and Ireland. It will be capable of handling up to four 750-metre-long trains per day, primarily transporting semi-trailers and swap bodies. The site will also provide vehicle washing and maintenance services for both semi-trailers and swap bodies.
Modalis has already planned a rail connection between this terminal and northern Italy, although the specific Italian destination has not yet been disclosed. The terminal will also be accessible to third-party operators. Dunkirk port is already integrated into the French and international rail network and, in 2022, extended the tracks at its container terminal. The port also handles the transport of new vehicles, and since 2024 Ceva Logistics has been operating there to link ocean-going maritime transport with European destinations.
