Trieste-Sacconago train service launched
On the night of 5 December, the first freight train service commenced between the SST terminal at the Port of Trieste and the Malpensa Intermodal terminal in Sacconago (Busto Arsizio). Initially offering four weekly trains, the service aims to expand in 2025. This new link, developed through a collaboration involving the Port of Trieste, DFDS, SBB, and Malpensa Intermodale, marks a significant step towards sustainable logistics.
Black Friday 2024 sees an 18% rise in shipments
Black Friday sales recorded an 18% increase in shipments compared to 2023, with clothing and electronics among the top purchased categories, according to Packlink. Domestic shipments dominated, accounting for 82.9%, while Germany, France, and Spain were the primary international destinations. Shop2Door deliveries rose to 23.38%, while traditional Door2Door services dropped to 72.96%, reflecting a shift towards more sustainable shipping options.
New contract signed for MSC Air Cargo pilots

Deutsche Bahn forecasts 70% drop in operating profit following Schenker sale
Deutsche Bahn anticipates a 70% decline in operating profit between 2024 and 2025 following the sale of its profitable logistics unit Schenker to Denmark’s DSV for €14.3 billion. In 2024, with Schenker still included, Deutsche Bahn expects an operating profit of €700 million, which is set to fall to €200 million post-sale. The transaction will help Deutsche Bahn reduce its €33 billion debt and refocus on domestic rail transport, targeting €1 billion in net profit by 2027.
BASF and Koch embrace electric trucks for long-distance transport
BASF Coatings and Koch International have successfully completed trials of electric trucks for long-distance freight, covering over 10,000 kilometres and achieving a 45% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to diesel trucks. Following the trial, BASF Coatings has adopted this sustainable solution for its transport operations across Germany. During the test phase, over 2,000 tonnes of goods were transported with promising results in energy consumption and operational costs.
Amazon Cividate found guilty of anti-union conduct
The Bergamo Court has upheld a complaint by the Filt CGIL union, finding Amazon Italia Logistica guilty of anti-union conduct at its Cividate al Piano site. The case dates back to July, when Amazon refused to convene a union meeting, forcing workers to gather on the street. The judge confirmed the violation of workers' rights under Italy’s Workers’ Statute. Over 1,000 employees, many on temporary contracts, work at the Cividate facility.
