The Croatian daily Index.hr reports that at around 4:00 AM on 7 December 2024, Luka Rijeka experienced a cyberattack that extracted and encrypted certain data, including customer communications, cargo information, and contracts. The company clarified that the impact was minimised thanks to the immediate activation of their protection system, ensuring no interruption to port operations in Rijeka. The compromised data was subsequently recovered from backups, and the company has stated it will not pay the ransom demanded by the cybercriminals, believed to be members of the 8Base group. The attackers had set a deadline of 10 December. This incident highlights a worrying trend of rising cyber threats in the maritime sector. In the first half of 2024 alone, 23,400 malware detections and 178 ransomware incidents were recorded globally in the industry.
