At the beginning of November 2025, Volvo Trucks unveiled an updated version of its I-Roll technology, introducing an automatic engine start/stop function — a world first for the heavy-duty vehicle sector. The new feature, developed in-house by the Swedish manufacturer, aims to further reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It builds on the integration of the existing I-See and I-Roll systems, using continuous analysis of data on road topography and curvature. When a downhill section is detected, the engine is temporarily switched off and automatically restarted as soon as required. During this phase, fuel consumption drops to zero and no CO2 is emitted from the exhaust.
According to Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, the goal is to make road transport more efficient in terms of both fuel use and environmental impact. The new function activates at speeds above 60 kilometres per hour and, depending on factors such as terrain profile and outside temperature, Volvo estimates it can deliver up to 1% savings in both fuel and CO2 emissions, in addition to the benefits already achieved with previous I-Roll versions. The feature will be available from November 2025 on Volvo FH and FH Aero models equipped with the 13-litre diesel engine.
