On 23 May 2025, the new elevated Superba road was inaugurated in Genoa, providing a direct link between the Genoa Airport motorway tollgate and the port area of Sampierdarena. The project, valued at approximately 8.9 million euros, represents a crucial component of the access system to the port terminals, helping to reduce interference between industrial vehicle traffic and the city's urban circulation. The new artery is part of a wider infrastructure initiative affecting the six-kilometre main road connecting the western part of the city to the historic quays of Bettolo and Sanità, passing through the San Benigno junction, a critical node in Genoa’s road network and the main access point to the Genoa Ovest motorway tollgate.
The Superba road will eventually connect to the new Ponte del Papa, completed in 2024, which features a double-deck arch structure with a single span of nearly one hundred metres and a total weight of 2,000 tonnes. It includes four elevated traffic lanes and two ground-level lanes, designed to be doubled in case of emergency. This new configuration will ensure smoother traffic flow within the port area, making access to the gates more efficient and enhancing the overall logistics of goods movement. A 200-metre connector is still needed to link the two infrastructures.
The broader set of works is part of the Extraordinary Investment Programme for the city of Genoa, launched in 2021 in the aftermath of the Morandi bridge collapse. With a total budget of around 166.8 million euros, the plan aims to make access to the port terminals more efficient and secure, providing direct links between the port and the main motorway routes towards France, Piedmont, Milan, and the inland logistics hubs.
