Following a ten-day truce between the United States and Iran, which came into force on 8 April 2026 and has so far not led to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, President Trump said on 17 April that Israel would suspend its attacks in Lebanon for ten days. Both ceasefires remain fragile and highly limited, but they have produced a significant outcome: the reopening of the strait to all cargo vessels, at least for the duration of the ceasefire. This was confirmed by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi.
In a post on X, Araghchi wrote: "In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage of all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is declared fully open for the remaining period of the ceasefire, along the coordinated route already announced by the Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Republic of Iran". On his Truth social platform, the US president responded: “Iran has just announced that the Strait of Iran is fully open and ready for transit. Thank you!”
