On 30 July 2025, the Board of Directors of Ita Airways approved the 2026–2030 Industrial Plan, aimed at revitalising the airline both as Italy’s national carrier and as an increasingly international player. Developed in collaboration with the Lufthansa Group, the document is based on three key objectives: strengthening the company’s market position, developing its network and fleet, and progressively integrating into the German group.
At the heart of the new strategy is the expansion of intercontinental traffic. Ita Airways plans to open new long-haul routes from its Rome Fiumicino hub to North America, South America, Asia and Africa—markets identified as strategic for capturing growing demand and enhancing Italy’s appeal as a tourist destination. In parallel, the airline aims to improve connectivity across Europe and the Mediterranean by leveraging commercial partnerships and alliances with other carriers. These new routes, designed to be flexible and adaptable to economic and geopolitical shifts, will not only boost passenger traffic but also create fresh opportunities in the cargo sector.
Alongside network expansion, the airline will launch a major fleet renewal programme. Starting in 2026, a new long-haul aircraft will be introduced each year, with the goal of gradually replacing older aircraft with more efficient, lower-emission models. By 2030, the fleet is expected to comprise around one hundred aircraft, nearly all of them next-generation models capable of significantly reducing fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
The Industrial Plan also marks a key milestone in Ita Airways’ gradual integration into the Lufthansa Group. Operational, technological and commercial synergies expected over the next five years are set to enhance competitiveness, broaden market reach and deliver substantial economies of scale. From the early months of 2026, the airline’s cargo presence will be strengthened through an expanded network of codeshare agreements.
