During the 2026 spring holiday period, from 25 April to 3 May, Italy’s schedule of traffic restrictions for heavy goods vehicles with a gross vehicle weight above 7.5 tonnes imposes three days of stoppage. Two are consecutive: Saturday 25 April from 9:00 to 22:00 and Sunday 26 April during the same time window. The third truck ban falls on Friday 1 May, again from 9:00 to 22:00. Heavy vehicle traffic will be unrestricted on Saturday 2 May, while the usual Sunday ban will apply on 3 May, from 9:00 to 22:00. Standard exemptions remain in place for specific types of transport and vehicles.
Anas (National Autonomous Roads Corporation) expects around 95 million vehicles to travel on its road and motorway network over the holiday period and will step up monitoring by deploying 2,500 staff on rotating shifts, with its National Operations Room active around the clock. The company forecasts traffic will rise by 6% on 23 and 24 April, before falling by 11% on 25 April, when all destinations will be reached. A new surge is expected from Thursday 30 April, with traffic up 6% on average; peaks of 10% are forecast in central and southern Italy, reaching 13% in Sicily and Sardinia. The final major return flow is expected over the weekend of 2 and 3 May, with traffic up 8% on Sunday. The main routes affected will include the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, the A19 Palermo–Catania motorway, the SS16 Adriatica, the SS6 Appia, the SS106 Jonica and the SS18 Tirrenia Inferiore.
Meanwhile, Autostrade per l’Italia announced that at 02:30 on 23 April it had fully restored traffic on the A14 Bologna–Taranto section between Vasto Sud and Termoli, with two lanes in each direction. In a statement, it explained that “the full reopening follows the evolution of the conditions of the Petacciato landslide front and the activities carried out, which made it possible to restore the motorway to its full operating configuration, after the damage caused by the landslide that occurred after Easter. The initial safety measures and subsequent phases were carried out by the task force deployed by Autostrade per l’Italia”.
