Terminali Italia, a company within FS Logistix, will manage the Orte Intermodal Terminal, in the province of Viterbo, from January 2027. The operation forms part of FS Logistix’s strategy to strengthen its integrated service offering, with a particular focus on developing road-rail intermodality, and brings the total number of terminals managed by the group in Europe to 23. Located in a central position along Italy’s main national transport routes, the terminal aims to become a reference hub for freight flows between the north and south of the country, with potential connections towards the Adriatic side and the main European corridors. The terminal is directly connected to the Orte rail node, an intersection between the Rome-Florence line, the Orte-Falconara line and the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor, and is close to major road arteries, including the A1 Milan-Naples motorway and the E45/SS675. Its proximity to Rome, the port of Civitavecchia and the main production districts of central Italy strengthens the terminal’s potential as a platform serving industrial and distribution supply chains.
According to FS Logistix, the terminal has around 96,000 square metres of yards, three tracks dedicated to intermodal operations, mobile cranes, shunting locomotives and specialised equipment for handling intermodal transport units. The hub is designed to serve a broad and diversified logistics and production catchment area: distribution logistics and large-scale retail distribution in the Rome area, including from the perspective of a back-port facility for the capital, the Terni steelmaking hub, the Narni chemical hub, the Civita Castellana ceramics district and the Tuscia agri-food sector. “The entry of the Orte Intermodal Terminal into the Terminali Italia network is part of the systemic vision to complete Lazio’s strategic infrastructure and represents a concrete opportunity to strengthen our presence in central Italy and support businesses in the transition towards more sustainable, intermodal and integrated logistics models,” said Sabrina De Filippis, chief executive of FS Logistix, adding that the objective is to work with the market from the outset to build new connections and services capable of meeting the needs of local production and distribution supply chains.
The infrastructure completion that made the activation of the terminal possible was presented by Regione Lazio (Lazio Region) on 27 March 2025 as the final stage of a project awaited for more than ten years. The project, linked to Law 240/1990 and launched with the opening of the rail terminal construction site on 28 February 2020, involved an extension of 55,000 square metres of paved surface, the construction of 1,200 metres of electrified rail spur and four 750-metre tracks compliant with European standards, as well as a track connected directly to the warehouses. As stated, the investment amounts to €11.45 million, of which more than €8 million comes from the Fondo di Sviluppo e Coesione (Development and Cohesion Fund) under the Agreement between the Government and the Lazio Region, while more than €3 million derives from ministerial funds. The entire Interporto complex extends over an area of 320,000 square metres, which also includes a 12,500-square-metre warehouse, of which 6,000 square metres are equipped with cold rooms with controlled temperature and humidity.
Under EU Regulation 1315/2013, Lazio Region classifies the infrastructure among the road-rail terminals of the TEN-T Comprehensive network, along the TEN-T5 Helsinki-La Valletta corridor, with the aim of removing the freight transport bottleneck north of Rome and ensuring continuity of connections with Europe and the Mediterranean. Management of the Interporto is entrusted to Interporto Centro Italia Orte, based in Orte, in the province of Viterbo. Its shareholding is divided among 14 shareholders: Società Imprenditori Ortani holds 48.33% of the capital, Finapi 24.39%, while institutional shareholders include Comune di Orte (Municipality of Orte) with 7.05%, Comune di Viterbo (Municipality of Viterbo) and Provincia di Viterbo (Province of Viterbo), both with 6.04%, and Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Centro Settentrionale (Port System Authority of the Central Northern Tyrrhenian Sea). Private shareholders also include Intesa Sanpaolo, FS group’s Mercitalia Logistics and Engie Servizi. The company also operates through its wholly owned subsidiary Interporto Orte, managed by Carmelo Cardo; the parent company is chaired by Lorenzo Cardo, who has led the business since 2018.
