Algeria is stepping up its export activity, a trend that has led the national airline’s cargo division to strengthen its fleet of dedicated cargo aircraft, which currently includes a B737-800Bcf, a B737-700C and an Atr72-500c, according to the company’s website. During the Salon International de la Logistique, CEO Redouane Aouf announced the acquisition of another freighter, expected to enter service by summer 2025. He did not disclose the aircraft model, noting only a transport capacity of 17 tonnes. The company also uses the bellyhold space of passenger aircraft operated by parent company Air Algérie and is based at Algiers’ Houari Boumediene Airport.
In 2024, Air Algérie Cargo transported around 29,000 tonnes, marking a 32 percent increase on the previous year, and forecasts that by the end of 2025 volumes will grow by between eight and twelve percent. In the first four months alone, it has already handled 3,500 tonnes. This upward trend is being driven by a surge in Algerian exports, particularly in the agricultural and food industries. Key destinations include Europe, Canada and the Middle East. To support air freight transport, Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Trade decided in January 2025 to subsidise 50 percent of export transport costs.
