On 18 September 2025, the Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Ligure Occidentale (Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority) announced the completion of three major projects in the Bettolo-Sanità area of the Port of Genoa, achieving the goal of strengthening operations, safety and intermodality, in line with the 3.5-billion-euro Extraordinary Programme. The first project involved the reconfiguration of the Calata Olii Minerali quay, which can now accommodate tankers up to 130 metres in length and handle two berths simultaneously. This transformation doubles the liquid bulk sector’s capacity while also enhancing operational safety.
The second investment focused on the Calata Bettolo yard, designed to support heavy loads and the introduction of advanced automation technologies in container handling. The area has been reorganised to ensure seamless integration between ship, quay and land connections, with the aim of streamlining the logistics chain and reducing handling times.
The third project concerned the renewal of the Bettolo-Rugna rail yard, which began partial operations in May 2025 and has now been completed. The facility includes nine 500-metre tracks, high-efficiency rail-mounted transtainer cranes and an innovative locomotive shunting system. It can handle up to twenty pairs of trains per day, with scope for further growth once the Genoa rail hub and the Terzo Valico link are fully operational.
