Senza figli, aveva destinato l'intero patrimonio imprenditoriale alla Kühne Foundation, che attraverso Kühne Holding controlla il 60,1% di Kühne+Nagel, il 30% di Hapag-Lloyd e oltre il 20% di Lufthansa.
