On 26 August 2025, Italian FS confirmed the roll-out of the Ertms (European Rail Transport Management System) on board the trains of the FS Italiane Group. The investment, partly financed through the European “Connecting Europe Facility (Cef) – Transport 2014-2020 and 2021-2027” programme, will enable the modernisation of 442 locomotives. The upgrade will involve 382 Trenitalia trains – comprising 272 regional units, 74 Intercity and Eurocity trains, and 36 high-speed trains – as well as 60 locomotives belonging to FS Logistix.
Installation across Trenitalia’s entire fleet, which amounts to around 2,000 onboard systems and an overall investment of 700 million euros, is scheduled for completion by 2030. For FS Logistix, the extension of the programme to its full fleet is planned by 2033. The operation also covers new locomotives for Mercitalia Rail and TX Logistik, which are currently being delivered and already equipped with Ertms, as well as a portion of the shunting locomotives operated by Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal.
“The installation of the Ertms system on board our trains marks a crucial step, fully integrated with the initiatives the FS Group is implementing across the rail network,” said Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, chief executive officer and general manager of the FS Group. “This move is essential to ensure effective communication between onboard and infrastructure technologies, allowing each train to benefit from a significant improvement in service quality, both in terms of safety and innovation. The project is aligned with the objectives of the FS Group’s 2025-2029 Strategic Plan, which aims to achieve 100% coverage of the Core Extended network with the Ertms system by 2040.”
