Renault Trucks announced on 4 June 2026 a new powertrain for its T, T High, C and K heavy-duty vehicle ranges, combining the new DE13 R engine with an updated version of the Optidriver automated gearbox and advanced predictive driving systems. According to the manufacturer, these solutions together reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 4% compared with the previous generation. "Alongside the acceleration of the development of our electric offering, we are continuing to improve the energy efficiency of our combustion-powered vehicles to help our customers further reduce fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and total cost of ownership. The new powertrain is a concrete example of this," says Antoine Duclaux, president of Renault Trucks.
The DE13 R diesel engine is available with power of up to 540 hp and 2,800 Nm of torque, which the manufacturer describes as the highest figure on the market for this engine category. Renault Trucks has used new materials, including high-strength grey cast iron and compacted graphite iron, to improve robustness and long-term durability. Maximum cylinder pressure now reaches 250 bar, while a new fuel supply system with an external high-pressure pump optimises injection precision and overall engine efficiency. The DE13 R also includes, as standard, increased engine braking power through the Optibrake+ system, helping control the vehicle on non-urban routes and improving driver comfort.
The engine is paired with a new-generation Optidriver gearbox, featuring renewed management software and improved gear-changing strategies. The French manufacturer says gear changes are up to 20% faster and smoother than in the previous generation, with direct benefits for driving smoothness and reduced fuel consumption. The new powertrain also uses specific technologies designed to improve energy efficiency. The Optivision+ predictive cruise control system uses topographical data and road signs to optimise gear changes, acceleration and vehicle speed according to the type of route. The Predictive Engine Stop & Start system automatically switches off the engine when it is not needed, while keeping essential vehicle functions active and restarting it instantly when required. Dedicated aerodynamic measures complete the package, reducing drag and helping contain fuel consumption.
For hauliers seeking to improve energy savings and productivity, Renault Trucks also offers the Smart Racer2 version, which brings together all available efficiency technologies: aerodynamic optimisation, Optivision+, low rolling resistance tyres and advanced predictive powertrain management. The new powertrain is approved for use with HVO and B100, supporting the transition to alternative energy sources without structural changes to the vehicle. The DE13 R engine also complies with the NNR3 noise standard, with a reduced acoustic impact compared with previous generations.
For drivers, the new-generation vehicles are equipped with Smart Steering, a system that improves directional stability and integrates the Driver Assist lane-keeping function, with automatic distance adjustment from the vehicle ahead. These solutions, combined with smoother gear changes and improved engine responsiveness, help make the driver’s work less demanding, particularly on long-distance routes. With the 2027 generation, Renault Trucks is applying these solutions to vehicles intended both for long-haul transport and the construction sector.
