Containerships released in Malta after three-year detention
Two containerships previously operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company have been released from detention at the port of Valletta, Malta, after nearly three years. The vessels, Msc Bilbao and Msc Valencia, each with a capacity of 8,204 TEUs, had been held since 2022 due to their links to GTLK Joint-Stock Company, a Russian entity subject to OFAC sanctions. On 7 July 2025, both ships were transferred to the ownership of Trans-Shipping Company and renamed Tsc Dorado and Tsc London. Tsc, affiliated with Germany’s Hammonia Reederei, is not subject to Russia-related sanctions, allowing the lifting of the arrest. Financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. The vessels can now return to commercial service, although it remains unclear whether MSC will continue to charter them or if Tsc will assign the ships to other operators. In the past, both vessels were under bareboat charter to MSC. Legal disputes involving crew wages and fuel supplies had led to court proceedings in Malta.
Valencia port receives new ship-to-shore cranes
The port of Valencia has taken delivery of two new ship-to-shore cranes manufactured by Liebherr, which arrived in large pre-assembled sections from the port of Fenit in Ireland. The main components included a 76.3-metre-long derrick boom and a 69.6-metre main girder. Around 90 axle lines of self-propelled modular transporters were used for internal handling. Once assembled, the cranes were moved 600 metres to the quay and precisely placed on longitudinal rails.
