Amazon’s Jesi site opening postponed to September 2026

The large Amazon logistics hub in the Coppetella area, within the Interporto Marche in Jesi, will become operational in September 2026. The new date was communicated in December 2025 by the mayor of Jesi, Lorenzo Fiordelmondo, following formal confirmation from the management of the US multinational. The announcement brings to an end a prolonged period of uncertainty over the start-up of the facility, originally scheduled for mid-2025 and subsequently postponed several times.

The official communication came more than a year after the completion of the building, which was finished in June 2025. Although the structure was already ready from a construction standpoint, Amazon chose to delay its activation, explaining that the centre would only enter service after the full verification of all operational and safety conditions required for integration into its European logistics network.

According to the company and local institutions, the reasons for the postponement are linked to a combination of technical and organisational factors. The Jesi hub has been designed to host state-of-the-art automated systems and advanced Amazon Robotics solutions, which require complex phases of installation, testing and certification. These aspects are accompanied by logistics planning activities needed to coordinate goods flows with other Italian and European hubs, as well as the training of staff who will work at the facility.

Alongside corporate considerations, the local context has also played a role in slowing the schedule. The Interporto Marche area was affected until September 2025 by redevelopment and infrastructure upgrade works, necessary to support European-level freight traffic volumes. Some issues also remain related to road access, particularly concerning the expected load on the local road network and the Ancona Nord motorway junction, as well as requests to strengthen rail connections.

The Jesi distribution centre represents one of Amazon’s most significant logistics investments in Italy. The facility covers a total surface area of 240,000 square metres across four levels, with a height of around 27 metres. The declared investment amounts to €180 million. In terms of size, the site is set to become Amazon’s largest hub in Italy and the second largest in Europe. Operationally, the warehouse is designed to serve around 200 destinations across Italy and Europe, with 58 loading bays dedicated to outbound shipments. The Amazon Robotics system will allow robots to move shelving units directly to workstations, supporting picking, sorting and packing activities and reducing order preparation times.

Particular attention has been paid to environmental aspects. The building has been designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification under the International New Construction 2016 protocol. Distinctive features include a vertical green wall of around 3,500 square metres, considered the largest in Europe, with more than 22,000 native plants. A photovoltaic system with a capacity of over 4 megawatts has been installed on the roof, alongside rainwater collection and reuse systems. Compensatory green areas are also planned, with the planting of 86 mature trees, double the number removed during the construction phase.

From an employment perspective, Amazon has confirmed plans for around 1,000 permanent hires in the first three years of operation. The new hub will become the group’s eleventh distribution centre in Italy, the first in the Marche region and the fifth in central-southern Italy, strengthening the role of Interporto Marche as a logistics node of national relevance. The Jesi location was chosen for its proximity to the A14 motorway, the SS76 expressway and connections to the port of Ancona and the rail network. The integration of the site into Amazon’s logistics network will take place within a broader reorganisation of the group’s European operations, characterised by increasing automation and a revision of operational priorities.
