Volvo Trucks has reaffirmed its commitment to long-haul electric transport with a double announcement made on 20 May 2025. The first concerns the Volvo FH Aero Electric, which the Swedish manufacturer claims will achieve a range of 600 kilometres. The second relates to the new Megawatt Charging System, a standard that enables battery charging from 20 to 80 per cent in about forty minutes. This corresponds to the mandatory rest period for drivers after four and a half hours of driving. The new electric model, due to be available in the second quarter of 2026, will be compatible with this system, though interested parties can already sign a letter of intent.
Thanks to its three-axle configuration (6x2) and the addition of an auxiliary axle, the FH Aero Electric will reach a total weight of 48 tonnes. This compensates for the increased weight due to the batteries, ensuring a payload capacity comparable to that of diesel vehicles. The eight batteries that can be installed on board will provide a total energy capacity of 780 kWh, made possible by a new integrated electric drivetrain on the drive axle (e-axle), which frees up space on the chassis.
The new model forms part of a broader ecosystem of solutions developed by Volvo Trucks to support businesses in their energy transition. The offering includes consultancy for route electrification planning, charging management both at depots and en route, and continuous fleet performance monitoring.
