CargoBeamer launched an intermodal connection between Stuttgart and Milan on 13 April 2026, linking the Duss terminal in Kornwestheim with Malpensa Intermodale, in the north-west quadrant of the Milan metropolitan area. The service is designed to strengthen flows between south-west Germany and northern Italy along the transalpine corridor via Switzerland, responding to growing demand for capacity in combined transport. The connection initially offers four round trips per week, with an increase to five planned in the medium term. Rail traction is provided by FFS Cargo International.
The new route ensures operational continuity with the previous Stuttgart-Kornwestheim–Domodossola service and follows the launch in January of the Liège–Domodossola link, progressively expanding the operator’s network. The service enables the transport of all types of semi-trailers, including non-craneable units, refrigerated trailers, ADR units and tankers, as well as containers and swap bodies. The launch comes amid a reorganisation of transalpine services following the closure of the rolling motorway between Freiburg and Novara. In this context, CargoBeamer aims to guarantee capacity continuity, particularly for non-craneable semi-trailers, a segment that had relied on the previous solution as a well-established Alpine crossing channel.
Loris Timm, chief operating officer of CargoBeamer, said the new connection responds to clear demand for additional capacity between south-west Germany and the Milan area, also highlighted by the strong start of the Liège–Domodossola service. Positioning at the Milan-Sacconago terminal also enables flows linked to both road and air transport, reinforcing the role of the Milan area as an integrated logistics hub. The service delivers an estimated reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of around 88% compared with diesel road transport.
