On 16 May 2025, Mercitalia Logistics and Logtainer revealed a commercial agreement for the joint development of intermodal services focused on maritime containers. The collaboration aims to strengthen the logistics network by integrating rail and road transport. It stems from the desire to combine the complementary expertise of the two companies: Mercitalia Logistics in freight rail traction in Italy, and Logtainer in intermodal logistics. The goal is to offer a high-frequency, widespread rail-road service capable of covering the entire national territory and extending into Europe.
Established with the aim of making container rail transport competitive, Logtainer has emerged as a major private Italian operator in terms of managed trains, operating over six thousand trains per year and managing a logistics network spread across northern and central Italy. With a turnover of approximately 98 million euros in 2023 and more than 170,000 full containers handled in 2021, the company operates offices and terminals in Milan, Genoa, Rubiera, Padua, Pordenone and La Spezia, and works in synergy with the ports of Livorno, Naples, Ravenna and Venice.
Logtainer also manages a fleet of around 500 industrial vehicles, including both its own and third-party hauliers, enabling full integration between rail and road transport. At its Rubiera and Limito di Pioltello terminals, the company provides additional services such as maintenance, repairs and special treatments for containers. The company is also engaged in a transformation process to become a licensed railway operator, aiming to gain autonomy in traction and strengthen direct control across the entire logistics chain.
