The initiative, called Spoke 4, is a collaborative effort between the Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Ligure Occidentale (Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority), the University of Genoa and Raise Liguria, aimed at testing a quadruped robot to support inspection and monitoring activities in the port. The trial involves Spot, the robot designed by Boston Dynamics, which is being used in areas deemed critical for personnel access, such as ship holds and zones where hazardous materials are stored.
This four-legged robot is specifically built to navigate complex environments, meaning tight spaces, staircases, obstacles and narrow corridors do not affect its operational efficiency. Spot can operate autonomously or be remotely controlled. In autonomous mode, it can explore its surroundings, create 3D maps and select the safest routes. When tele-operated, a technician guides the robot in real time using a virtual reality headset, receiving images and data that help assess risks. Project leaders emphasise that the goal is not to replace workers, but to protect them.
Spoke 4 is notable for the collaborative model it embraces. The Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, committed to ensuring the safety of port workers, has signed an agreement with the University of Genoa to promote the testing of digital and robotic solutions. Alongside public bodies, private stakeholders also play a key role: the company Ignazio Messina has made its terminals available for the trial activities.
