Tarros expands terminal, fleet and maritime routes

On 27 August 2026, Tarros group announced an investment plan covering the entire transport chain, from the port terminal to its vehicle and container fleet, as well as the digitalisation of commercial processes and the strengthening of rail and maritime connections. These measures will be implemented over the coming months and will include the start of expansion works at the Terminal del Golfo in La Spezia, along with the reorganisation of some maritime services from September.

The first phase of the expansion and redevelopment of the Terminal del Golfo includes the extension of quays and an increase in operating and storage areas, with the aim of raising capacity at the La Spezia port facility. The group is also continuing meetings with potential strategic and operational suppliers to develop new traffic routes and share projects and investments in the Mediterranean.

The programme also involves Carbox, the group company active in national and international road and rail transport and in support services for port and intermodal logistics, through the consolidation of its Italian network, the strengthening of its fleet and the digitalisation of operational processes. In the Pomara area, adjacent to the Terminal del Golfo, Carbox has built a new facility for the storage and management of empty and full containers, including refrigerated units. Subsidiaries Carbox Maroc and Carbox Egypt support inland transport services in the main Mediterranean markets, connecting ports with inland destinations. On sustainability, the group is introducing new-generation industrial vehicles, testing HVO fuel and adopting digital tools to manage transport flows.

As regards containers, after introducing the Tarros Certified Container, the company has started renewing its fleet with newly built units featuring higher quality specifications. An initial batch of 350 20-foot units has already been purchased and will be delivered shortly, while further orders are planned in the coming months. In September, Tarros will introduce an extension of carrier liability cover for all transport operations carried out in Italy. Customers will also be able to request a further extension of cover through the insurance tools made available by the group.

Digital transformation is continuing with the introduction of new software to manage quotations, intended for the entire Tarros Network in the Mediterranean and designed to reduce response times in the commercial process. On the rail side, Tarros has launched a new weekly connection between Frövi, in Sweden, and Parma, continuing to the port of La Spezia. The transit time is four days, and the service operates in both directions, linking Tarros Network’s Mediterranean destinations from the La Spezia hub.

In mid-September, the Great Pendulum Service will also be reorganised, the maritime service covering the entire Tarros network from Portugal to Lebanon and Syria: six vessels will provide a fixed-day weekly frequency, connecting twelve ports on the rotation. Also in mid-September, Tarros will renew its connection with Libya through the vessel Vento di Zefiro and the regular inclusion of the port of Salerno in the rotation, which will be: La Spezia, Salerno, Malta, Tripoli, Misurata.

Over the past year, the group has also increased its workforce with 37 new hires and 23 internships. It is also implementing projects linked to artificial intelligence and new organisational models, while training totalled around 5,000 hours across technical, professional and managerial skills, with an average of 22 hours per employee per year. Outgoing turnover stands at 2.41%, while 14% of employees are under 30 and 47% are aged between 31 and 50.
