In 2025 Morocco’s ports handled 262.6 million tonnes of cargo, a new all-time high and an 8.9% increase on 2024. Growth was driven both by rising domestic traffic and by the expansion of transhipment activities, with the Tanger Med port complex playing a central role. Domestic traffic, including imports, exports, cabotage and bunkering, reached 130.0 million tonnes, up 3.5% year on year. Transhipment recorded a stronger increase, climbing to 132.6 million tonnes, up 14.7%. For the first time, this segment exceeded half of total volumes, accounting for 50.5% of Moroccan port traffic.
The percentage breakdown shows transhipment at 50.5%, imports at 29.6%, exports at 15.7%, cabotage at 3.6% and bunkering at 0.6%. The figures point to a structural shift in the configuration of the country’s port system. While traffic linked to the domestic economy continues to grow, Morocco’s role as an international hub is strengthening in particular. The double-digit rise in transhipment indicates the country’s consolidation along maritime routes between Europe, Africa and the Americas, with deeper integration into global logistics chains.
The main beneficiary of this trend is the Tanger Med port complex, which in 2025 handled 161 million tonnes of cargo, up 13.3% compared with 2024. The port’s container terminals exceeded 11 million TEU, reaching 11.1 million, an 8.4% year-on-year increase, consolidating its position among the largest container hubs in the Mediterranean and across Africa. The port recorded 16,686 vessel calls in 2025, down 4.5% on the previous year, while the number of large vessels increased, with 1,319 ships over 290 metres in length, up 8.4%. This trend points to the growing deployment of higher-capacity container ships, with direct effects on operational efficiency and on the concentration of volumes per call.
Tanger Med’s ro-ro traffic confirms the port’s importance for the country’s industrial and agri-food supply chains. In 2025, 535,203 lorries transited through the port, up 3.6% compared with 2024. The increase is particularly linked to exports of industrial and agricultural products, which use the port as their main gateway to European markets.
Alongside the growth of Tanger Med, the ports managed by the Agence Nationale des Ports (National Ports Agency) also recorded positive performance, albeit more moderate. Cumulative traffic between January and the end of September reached 78.2 million tonnes, up 6% year on year. Monthly data show steady progress, in line with the recovery of trade flows and domestic demand.
