19,000 teu container ship calls at Trieste
On 8 February the container ship Msc Diana called at Molo VII in Trieste, becoming the largest vessel ever handled operationally at the Julian port. The ship, 400 metres long and 59 metres wide, with a capacity of around 19,000 teu, is the second largest ever to berth at the port after Msc Nicola Mastro. Arriving from Singapore, it will remain alongside until Wednesday evening, with around 4,200 container moves in total between discharge and loading. The operation will have a significant employment impact, with more than 1,000 worker shifts over three days and an estimated total of around 6,000 working hours. After Msc Diana, another call by a vessel of around 370 metres is expected at Molo VII, followed by New York, of similar size, confirming a phase of sustained traffic for the container terminal. From early April the new regular Dragon service by Msc will start, linking Asia, the Mediterranean and the east coast of the United States. Trieste will be included as the first Mediterranean port after Singapore, with a fixed weekly call.
