DB Cargo Full Load Solutions, the company within the Deutsche Bahn Group responsible for organising intermodal transport, has strengthened its European fleet with the acquisition of 200 semi-trailers in early July 2025. The new units, distinguished by the company's signature red livery, are already in operation along major European intermodal routes, by rail and by road. Half of the new semi-trailers are megatrailers, designed to offer greater cargo volume without increasing external dimensions. With a capacity of 100 cubic metres—ten more than a standard semi-trailer—and an internal height of three metres, featuring a roof that can be raised during loading, these vehicles are suited to transporting bulky or oversized goods more efficiently.
This configuration enables better use of each journey, reducing the overall number of trips required and, in turn, lowering carbon dioxide emissions. The result is a benefit both for the environment and for the optimisation of operating costs. A larger and more versatile fleet is a key component of our intermodal development strategy, said Sven Reissig, head of operations for the Eurasia, Road & Intermodal region at DB Cargo Full Load Solutions. It allows us to serve more customers while shifting more freight from road to rail, reducing environmental impact.
Alongside capacity, the company has also focused on the safety features of the new semi-trailers. The megatrailers are equipped with a greater number of securing straps, enhancing load stability during transport by both road and rail. This reduces the risk of goods being damaged and ensures a reliable service, especially for sensitive or high-value shipments.
