On 19 February 2025, the CEO of the Fs Group, Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, announced a significant investment in intermodal transport: 1.4 billion euros allocated to the Polo Logistica, which will use the funds both to upgrade and expand transport equipment and to develop digitalisation. This investment is part of a strategic plan aimed at strengthening the group’s position as a European multimodal operator, increasing the competitiveness of rail freight transport, integrating it with other transport modes, and responding to market challenges with an innovative approach.
Specifically, over the next five years, the Polo Logistica will undertake a comprehensive fleet renewal. The acquisition plan includes 110 electric locomotives for traction, 25 shunting locomotives that are either hybrid or powered by alternative fuels, over 2,000 next-generation wagons, 42 industrial vehicles, five mobile cranes, eight gantry cranes, and a new hybrid vessel for ferrying across the Strait of Messina.
These assets will complement the existing fleet, which comprises 650 locomotives, 14,000 wagons, five ships, and thirty industrial vehicles, in addition to the 21 terminals managed across Italy and Europe. A key component of the plan is the creation of an integrated digital platform that will serve as a single interface for customers, managing end-to-end transport. This tool will facilitate the connection between supply and demand in intermodal rail-road-sea transport, improving connectivity between terminals and hubs for last-mile logistics.
According to Donnarumma, the Polo Logistica is undergoing a profound transformation to better meet market demands by enhancing operational efficiency, fostering business synergies, and maximising asset value. The 2025-2029 Strategic Plan anticipates revenue growth at an annual rate of 8%, bringing turnover to two billion euros by 2029. Total investments over the period amount to 2.16 billion euros, focusing on digitalisation, sustainability, terminal development, and the acquisition of strategic assets.
