The Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico Orientale (Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea) took part in the Transport Logistic event in Munich within the collective space organised by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, which aimed to underline its strategic role in the logistics network of Central and Eastern Europe. This position is supported by the figures presented by the port authority, which indicate that in 2024 the port managed 2,500 trains to and from Germany, representing 32% of total rail traffic. The main routes connect Trieste with Cologne (nearly one thousand trains), Munich (over six hundred) and Duisburg (four hundred). With the launch in March 2025 of seven new weekly services between the Hhla Plt Italy terminal and Duisburg, the number of trains is expected to rise to approximately 2,800 in 2025.
The port of Trieste also plays a crucial role in securing energy supplies for Central Europe. Through the Transalpine Pipeline (Tal), the port meets the entire crude oil demand of southern Germany. In 2024 alone, it transported nearly 30 million tonnes of crude to the Bavarian and Baden-Württemberg Länder. Cooperation with Germany extends beyond traffic volumes: German stakeholders are already actively involved in the port’s development. Hhla, a Hamburg-based holding company, owns 75% of Hhla Plt Italy and is leading the ambitious project for the future Pier VIII, set to expand the port’s operational capacity. Duisport, the operator of the Duisburg port, holds a 15% stake in the Trieste Interport, with a clear interest in strengthening its hinterland logistics network.
The strategic importance of the region in the European logistics landscape reaches well beyond the port of Trieste, as reflected by the presence of numerous players at the Friuli Venezia Giulia stand, including terminal operators, freight forwarders, railway companies and inland ports. Participants included Alpe Adria, Hhla Plt Italy, Trieste Marine Terminal, Samer Seaports & Terminals, Samer & Co. Shipping, Trieste Intermodal Maritime Terminal, Seadock, Interporto di Trieste, Adria Port, Fhp Monfalcone, Francesco Parisi Casa di Spedizioni, Autamarocchi and T.Eva, as well as the inland ports of Gorizia-Sdag, Cervignano and Pordenone.
