Autostrade Alto Adriatico inaugurated the two new HGV parking areas at Fratta Nord and Fratta Sud on Friday 24 July 2026, along the A4 Venice-Trieste motorway between the Latisana and Portogruaro toll gates, in the municipality of Fossalta di Portogruaro, near Venice. Together, the two areas add 161 spaces for articulated lorries, designed to reduce irregular parking along the motorway corridor and improve traffic safety on one of the busiest routes linking eastern Italy with central Europe. Fratta Nord, 500 metres long and 100 metres wide, covers a fenced area of 5.9 hectares and provides 107 spaces for HGVs, as well as 11 coach parking spaces and the 35 existing parking bays to the north of the service area. Fratta Sud, smaller at 200 metres long and covering around 2.4 hectares, offers 54 spaces, while the 11 existing bays in the service area have been converted into seven coach parking spaces. Both facilities include toilets, showers, a refreshment point and a laundry service for hauliers.
The total investment amounts to €18,847,265, above the €13.5 million initially estimated as the tender base in the 2023-2024 period. The project, designed using Level LOD D BIM (Building Information Modelling), was awarded through an integrated contract covering detailed design and construction. The works, carried out by Brussi Costruzioni, began in November 2024 and were completed by May 2026. Management of the project was assigned to the structure of the Special Commissioner for the mobility emergency on the A4 Venice-Trieste section and the Villesse-Gorizia link road, based on a final design completed in 2022. The A4 Venice-Trieste recorded more than 54 million total transits in 2025, including 15 million by articulated lorries. The project was financed through Autovie Venete’s own funds, the motorway concessionaire for the section now incorporated into Autostrade Alto Adriatico. A variable message sign, due to be activated shortly, will provide drivers with real-time information on occupancy levels at the two new parking areas.
