Volvo Trucks is taking heavy-duty electric transport to a new milestone with a road train approved for a gross combination weight of up to 80 tonnes, the highest figure yet achieved by one of its battery-powered vehicles. The new model is designed for countries that permit weights above standard EU limits, particularly in Scandinavia, and combines a high payload with extended range, opening up electrification to more demanding road haulage operations. Several configurations are available: at a gross combination weight of 64 tonnes, the most common for heavy transport in Scandinavia, the stated range is up to 450 kilometres on a single charge, while at the maximum weights permitted in Sweden and Finland, 74 and 76 tonnes respectively, range falls to 420 kilometres. Sales will initially cover Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland, where the model will be gradually introduced from the first months of 2027.
The vehicle uses the same powertrain as the new generation of FH, FM and FMX electric vehicles unveiled by Volvo Trucks last April. The upgraded batteries provide 640 kWh of usable energy, thanks to a new control system and improved insulation designed for colder climates, allowing the cells to maintain efficiency even at low temperatures. Charging can be carried out using the Megawatt Charging System at 680 kW, taking the batteries from 20% to 80% in about 36 minutes, or via CCS2 at 360 kW, with the same charging interval taking around 70 minutes.
Among the new features introduced with this combination are hub-reduction axles, which improve ground clearance and pulling power even at higher weights. The solution is designed for off-road applications such as timber haulage and lighter construction work, but is also useful on paved routes where payload capacity is important. The vehicle is also equipped with an electric power take-off (e-PTO), eliminating the need for a separate diesel generator to power refrigeration units. All Volvo FH cabs are available except the XXL, in both standard and Aero versions, paired with an eight-speed gearbox developed specifically for electric motors.
