Monday 2 June 2025 marks a national holiday in Italy, commemorating the proclamation of the Republic. On that day in 1946, a referendum was held to abolish the monarchy. As on all public holidays, a driving ban will apply to industrial vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes, except in the case of standard exemptions. This ban will be in force from 7.00 a.m. until 10.00 p.m., matching the time slot of the ban already scheduled for Sunday 1 June. It is worth noting that, starting from June, the Sunday ban has been brought forward by two hours, now running from 7.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. instead of starting at 9.00 a.m. This revised schedule will remain in place until and including Sunday 28 September.
In addition to national restrictions, the Province of Bolzano has introduced specific bans for heavy goods vehicles on certain days in June that coincide with public holidays in Austria and Germany. The aim is to prevent disruption to Italian road traffic near the Austrian border, which could result from the bans in force in those neighbouring countries during their holidays. The driving restriction will apply to the South Tyrolean section of the Brenner motorway, between Vipiteno and the Austrian border, to prevent congestion along the final stretch of the A22.
More specifically, the ban will be enforced on Monday 9 June, a public holiday recognised in both Germany and Austria, and on Thursday 19 June, which is a public holiday in Austria and in some German Länder. In both cases, the ban will be active from midnight until 10.00 p.m. Lorries already travelling on the South Tyrolean stretch of the A22 at the time the restriction comes into force will be required to stop at the Sadobre car park in Vipiteno or in other designated rest areas indicated by Brennerautobahn, with the support of the Traffic Police.
The regulation includes a number of exemptions to ensure the continuity of essential services and the transport of sensitive goods. Vehicles transporting slaughter animals, perishable foodstuffs, beverages destined for tourist areas, roadside assistance vehicles and those engaged in combined road-rail transport may continue to circulate, provided they carry a valid reservation showing the vehicle registration number, date and time of the train.
