The Austrian Land of Tyrol has published the official 2026 schedule of traffic restrictions for industrial vehicles on the A12 motorway along the Brenner axis, which includes eight southbound metering days at the Kufstein-Nord checkpoint in the first quarter of the year. According to information provided by Asfinag and the Land’s technical departments, the model applied remains based on the distinction between tourist, commuter and heavy traffic, with the aim of preventing congestion along the Inn valley corridor on days considered most critical.
The new dates add to the night-time bans, the existing sectoral bans and the additional restrictions introduced to manage works on the Luegbrücke bridge. For this project, the Tyrolean government has indicated around 180 days of dual-lane operation and a total of fourteen additional days of bans for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes, bringing the overall number of southbound restrictions to 36 and northbound ones to 21.
The Land confirmed that the selection of dates is based on historical traffic volume analysis, the overlap of public holidays in Austria, Germany and Italy, and the schedule of works on the Tyrolean side. The authorities note that the average duration of metering in 2024 was around four hours, with systematic advance notifications to the sector and real-time updates via the Asfinag portal.
The 2026 schedule confirms the maximum threshold of three hundred trucks per hour, with metering starting at 5 a.m. On the selected days, vehicles arriving from Germany may proceed only within the defined hourly limit, with the objective of avoiding queues that could block access to the Tyrolean road network. The system, the Land stresses, is integrated with tourist flow management and lane control near major construction sites, and is applied in coordination with the ministry, police and motorway operators.
The metering days for the first quarter are as follows: Wednesday 7 January (after Epiphany); Monday 2 February; Monday 9 February; Monday 16 February; Monday 23 February; Monday 2 March; Monday 9 March; Monday 16 March. In the following months (second, third and fourth quarter of 2026), the full metering schedule will be published once additional planned restrictions are finalised, particularly those linked to works on the Luegbrücke and periods of heavy traffic. The Land also reminds operators that, in the event of extraordinary occurrences, additional unplanned metering days may be introduced and communicated via Asfinag’s digital channels.
