On 18 March 2025, the port of Civitavecchia gained two additional docks, 33 and 34, at the ferry dockyard. The Port System Authority of the Northern Central Tyrrhenian Sea took delivery of them ahead of the originally scheduled May deadline, making them fully operational. The authority’s extraordinary commissioner, Pino Musolino, explained that this early completion allows the port to enhance its operational capacity with 50,000 square metres of fully developed yards.
With a length of 340 metres for dock 33 and 320 metres for dock 34, the infrastructure enables the port to accommodate a greater number of vessels and diversify its traffic. This development aligns with the infrastructural objectives funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which the port of Civitavecchia is meeting well ahead of schedule. The new infrastructure includes eleven 30-metre-high lighting towers with LED illumination, a system that improves energy efficiency and reduces environmental impact. Additionally, a new fire-fighting system has been installed, along with new ducting prepared for future facility upgrades.
The immediate commissioning of dock 33 was marked by the arrival of the vessel Thermopylae, a 200-metre-long vehicle carrier managed by the maritime agency Medov. Arriving from Marseille-Fos, the ship unloaded approximately 1,400 new Kia vehicles, engaging around 40 workers from Ant. Bellettieri, Coop. Cilp, and the Civitavecchia Port Company.
