Edison Energia has begun supplying 450 gigawatt hours of fully renewable electricity to FS Energy under the ten-year Corporate Power Purchase Agreement signed with Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane through Rfi. The agreement, which took effect on 1 October 2025, provides for the sale of 45 gigawatt hours a year at a fixed price, with energy generated by wind farms in Sicily and Abruzzo with a combined installed capacity of around 35 megawatts.
The supply is intended for the railway infrastructure managed by Rfi and will cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 180,000 tonnes over the duration of the contract. The operation is part of the FS Group’s sustainability strategy, aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and stabilising energy costs in a volatile market environment. The plan includes installing more than one gigawatt of renewable capacity by 2029, equivalent to 19 per cent of total demand, and around two gigawatts by 2034, which will cover 40 per cent of overall consumption.
The agreement follows the previous supply of 100 gigawatt hours signed in 2024 between the two companies, covering the energy needs of offices, stations and fixed installations nationwide. With this new deal, Edison strengthens its position in the growing market for long-term renewable energy contracts, a strategic segment for achieving the targets set out in the Integrated national energy and climate plan.
FS Energy, established within the FS Group to make the railway system’s energy procurement more efficient and sustainable, oversees activities related to renewable generation and self-consumption, including the deployment of photovoltaic installations. The company also plays a central role in managing commodity-related risks, improving planning and control of the group’s overall energy costs.
