Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) awarded the contract for the construction of the Brindisi intermodal hub. The contract was awarded to a consortium comprising Ici Italiana Costruzioni Infrastrutture, Esim, and a temporary group of professionals formed by Progin and 3BA. The project involves constructing a new station, Brindisi Intermodale, featuring four 750-meter tracks for freight train arrivals and departures. This station will link to the Adriatic line through a new single-track electrified line, connecting to the new "Brindisi Sud" junction.
The primary aim of the intermodal hub is to divert freight traffic away from the urban center, thereby enhancing logistical operations associated with the Port of Brindisi and its industrial hinterland. The project includes completing and equipping the new station with the necessary technology, which will be crucial for streamlining train terminal operations serving the port, industrial area, and future Intermodal Logistics Platform.
Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO and General Manager of RFI, emphasized the strategic importance of this project: "An important piece that aims to divert freight traffic from the urban fabric, with its centralized tracks for freight train arrivals and departures, thereby promoting connections between the Port of Brindisi and the Mediterranean. This represents a move towards more sustainable freight transport, opening southern Italy to Europe. Additionally, the planned works on the Brindisi hub will enable a more efficient connection with the Adriatic line, bringing the South closer to the rest of Europe." The project is slated for completion by 2026.
