On 2 December 2025 Psa Italy released its forecast for the year’s throughput at all its Italian terminals, confirming that volumes will surpass two million teu. The company states it remains the country’s leading gateway container terminal operator with 25% of national import and export volumes. Performance varied across the network, with stable volumes at Genoa Pra’, growth at Sech and a new all-time high at Venice-Vecon, alongside ongoing investment in sustainability and equipment upgrades. In the statement, Roberto Ferrari, chief executive of Psa Italy, noted that the global Psa network handled 100.5 million teu by October 2025, overtaking the 100.2 million teu recorded at the end of 2024, and highlighted the contribution of the Italian terminals within an international strategy that continues to evolve.
At Genoa’s Sech terminal, the year-end estimate stands at 305,000 teu, up from 295,000 teu in 2024. Venice-Vecon expects 340,000 teu, surpassing the 337,032 teu achieved in 2023 and setting a new terminal record. Genoa Pra’, the country’s main container gateway, is projected to close 2025 with 1,425,633 teu, reflecting a market-aligned trend. The year was marked by a concentration of cargo on larger vessels, leading to fewer port calls than in 2024 and a pattern of operational peaks followed by quieter phases. Rail traffic declined to 167,433 teu from 228,000 teu in 2024, a drop attributed to Rfi’s works in August, which restricted capacity on the Pra’ line.

A key operational development emerged in the second half of the year: in October 2025 the Ministry of Transport authorised the trial of simultaneous berthing for two 400-metre containerships at Genoa Pra’. The first operations involved the Cosco Shipping Taurus and the Evelyn Maersk, both 20,000 teu units. Ferrari described the authorisation as “a historic turning point for the national port sector”, noting that it enables the continuous handling of high-capacity vessels, reduces anchorage waiting times and allows two ships to be worked at once.
Environmental measures are progressing in Venice. Since February 2025 Venice-Vecon has replaced conventional diesel with HVO biofuel to power yard equipment, delivering a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The terminal has also used 100% wind-generated green electricity since December 2024, strengthening an ongoing decarbonisation pathway.
Investment in operational efficiency continues with the arrival, scheduled for December 2025, of new E-RTG electric cranes manufactured by Zpmc: six units destined for Genoa Pra’ and three for Venice-Vecon. At Sech, following the completion of remote control of the Kuntz rail equipment inaugurated in April 2025, two new ship-to-shore cranes are on the way, due for delivery in February 2026. The group’s commitment to innovation and development has also been recognised internationally: in October 2025 Psa International received the Italian Chamber of Commerce award in Singapore as “best Singaporean investor in Italy” for the year, acknowledging its contribution to the national port and logistics sectors.
