Starting from September 1, 2025, Rome Fiumicino Airport is expected to benefit from an increase in cargo traffic, thanks to the launch of new services from Asia operated by Lufthansa Cargo in cooperation with Ita Airways. The German airline announced this on August 1, specifying that the connections to the Italian airport from Delhi (India), Tokyo-Haneda (Japan), and Bangkok (Thailand) will be managed and marketed under the Lufthansa Cargo AWB (Air Waybill) prefix.
This marks a significant development in the cooperation between the two airlines, which was officially launched in June with the first operational flights and preceded in May by the start of commercial sales of Ita Airways’ bellyhold capacity on routes from South America to Rome. Traditionally less utilised than other European hubs for cargo flights, the Roman airport is now taking on a key role in handling logistics flows arriving from Asia, one of the world’s busiest cargo traffic regions.
Pending the necessary regulatory approvals, Lufthansa Cargo plans to gradually extend the cooperation to cover all continental and intercontinental routes operated by Ita Airways. This is a major expansion and, once fully implemented, the agreement will give customers of the German group access to an even broader global network, with a projected increase in marketed cargo capacity of nearly 20 per cent.
