Scrap metal moves by rail
Polo Logistica FS and the Fiori Group have launched a partnership for the rail transport of ferrous scrap from Pomezia to steelworks in northern Italy. After an initial road leg to the Polo Logistica terminal, the materials are loaded by Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal and transported by Mercitalia Rail. Each train replaces about thirty lorries, saving over 37 tonnes of CO2 per journey. The initiative, presented at Made in Steel in Milan, strengthens the circular economy and aligns with the 2025–29 strategic plan of the FS Group.
Tevex backs zero-emission refrigerated transport
Tevex Logistics has received the first two of a total order of 166 refrigerated semi-trailers from Schmitz Cargobull. The new additions include a fully electric S.KOe COOL and an S.KO COOL equipped with the S.CU d80 cooling unit and an ePTO interface, allowing zero-emission operation with electric tractors. The handover took place at the Vreden factory, attended by senior management from both companies. The selected solutions allow automatic switching between electric and diesel power, ensuring operational continuity and sustainability for temperature-controlled transport.
Giorgio Tuti appointed president of the ETF
Frank Moreels has stepped down as president of the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) to take on his new role as president of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), following a decision at the ITF congress in Marrakech. Meeting in Split, Croatia, the ETF Executive Committee elected Giorgio Tuti as president until the 2027 congress. Tuti, a Swiss national, has been active in the union movement since 1988 and led the Swiss transport union (SEV) from 2009 to 2023. He will remain president of the ETF’s railway section. Moreels will continue collaborating with the federation.
Sonepar rolls out AutoStore for logistics in Spain
Sonepar Spain has deployed Kardex AutoStore systems at its logistics centres in Valencia and Galicia, bringing a radical upgrade to its supply chain. The Valencia site, operational since February 2024, features eight Carousel ports, 30 robots and 30,000 bins. Following its success, the Arteixo centre in Galicia went live in October 2024 with a similar setup including six ports, 26 robots and 23,000 bins. Both sites feature automated cable cutting and the Intuitive Picking Assistant, enhancing ergonomics and accuracy. Kardex also provided an automatic cleaning system, cutting downtime significantly.
Zero emissions in the spotlight at NetZero Milan
From 14 to 16 May, Allianz MiCo in Milan will host NetZero Milan, an Expo-Summit organised by Fiera Milano and focused on decarbonising industry. Among the main players in the Mobility Climate Champion area, Volvo Trucks Italia will showcase its sustainable road transport solutions, including electric, LNG and hydrogen-powered vehicles. In Italy, where 87 percent of goods are transported by road, the challenge of cutting emissions in the sector is particularly pressing. According to Anfia, electric and hybrid truck registrations rose by 30 percent in the first two months of 2025. The summit will gather institutions and CEOs to explore key strategies and technologies on the path to net zero.
Aytekin Saray named CEO of Global GSA Group
Global GSA Group has appointed Aytekin Saray as its new CEO, marking a milestone in the company’s thirtieth anniversary year. Saray began his career in 1996 at Panalpina and joined the group in 2000, playing a pivotal role in its growth while serving in key positions including CCO and Managing Director for Central Europe. His appointment comes amid a broader transformation, which also sees Zafer Aggunduz join as CCO and a collaboration launched with CargoTech. At the same time, Boris Blagojevic becomes Managing Director of Mondial Airline Services for Eastern Europe.
Explosion aboard container ship Maersk Sana
On 28 April 2025, the container ship Maersk Sana, flagged in Singapore and owned by AP Moller Singapore, was struck by an explosion in the engine room while sailing between Newark and Singapore, approximately 250 to 400 nautical miles east of Bermuda. Three crew members were injured: one received treatment on board, two were evacuated to Bermuda, with one later transferred to the United States in critical but stable condition. The ship is adrift in the Atlantic without main propulsion but maintains electric power and lateral manoeuvring capability, awaiting a tug en route from Europe. Maersk has launched an investigation and is cooperating with the relevant authorities. There is no threat to other vessels and weather conditions are favourable.
