FS Logistix and Sito are strengthening their cooperation to develop logistics in north-west Italy through the signing of two memoranda of understanding focused on the Turin Orbassano freight village. The agreements were announced on 4 March 2026 at the freight village terminal during the Open Hub event, an initiative promoted by the two organisations to encourage dialogue between companies and institutions on the role of logistics as a competitiveness driver for the industrial system of north-west Italy.
The first memorandum was signed by FS Logistix, Interporto di Torino and Sito Logistica, launching a joint programme to develop new intermodal and conventional traffic and services at the Turin Orbassano rail yard. The aim is to expand the logistics offering through terminal-to-terminal and end-to-end solutions, while strengthening commercial initiatives with industrial customers and supply chain operators.
The second agreement involves Terminali Italia, a company within the FS Logistix group, and Sito Logistica. In this case, the objective is to transform the Orbassano area into an intermodal hub capable of competing at both national and European level. The agreement also outlines the path towards creating a network contract for the joint management of the intermodal terminals located in the area, also in view of the completion of new transport infrastructure in north-west Italy.
According to Sabrina De Filippis, chief executive of FS Logistix, the agreements reinforce the strategic role of the Turin freight village within the European logistics system: “Turin Orbassano confirms itself as a strategic logistics node supporting the industrial fabric of the territory. A platform where rail, road and integrated logistics converge and which benefits from direct access to the national and European corridors of the TEN-T network, strengthening connections with Europe and the ability of local supply chains to compete in the markets.” She also underlined how the location of the freight village represents a competitive advantage for companies in the area: “Being here means offering companies fast, competitive and integrated access to the main markets of the continent. The strategic posture of Orbassano is not only a matter of geography or infrastructure, but of industrial ecosystem.”
The agreement between FS Logistix and Sito also looks to a medium-term development horizon linked to the strengthening of transport infrastructure in north-west Italy. As explained by Enzo Pompilio D’Alicandro, vice president of Sito and chief executive of Sito Logistica, the collaboration is aimed at strengthening the intermodal services offering in view of the completion of new infrastructure projects expected by 2033. According to D’Alicandro, the agreement makes it possible to immediately launch operational cooperation between the terminals located in the Turin area, with the goal of integrating them into a single logistics system. The resulting intermodal hub will have a total of 12 tracks, more than 275,000 square metres of yards and around 10,000 square metres of warehouses equipped with internal rail tracks. The facility employs more than 50 direct staff and uses dedicated equipment and loading vehicles for intermodal operations.
The Orbassano terminal is today one of the main logistics platforms in north-west Italy. The logistics ecosystem in the area includes the rail yard, the freight village and several specialised terminals dedicated to intermodal and conventional traffic. The infrastructure covers a total area of around three million square metres and hosts about 80 logistics and industrial operators, employing more than 3,000 workers. Within this context, FS Logistix also operates with a significant presence in the north-west regions. According to figures presented during the event, the group handles more than 13 million tonnes of goods in the area and manages over 22,000 commercial trains, equal to more than 40% of the total trains in the system.
