Following reports in recent days, Msc’s entry into Interporto di Bologna through its subsidiary Medlog Holding Italia was confirmed on 22 July 2026. The terminal company announced the move in a statement summarising the shareholders’ meeting held on the same day, which focused on the approval of the annual financial statements and the subscription of the share capital increase approved on 23 December. The transaction, worth €8,000,058, was completed with the full subscription and payment of shares by the long-standing shareholders and the entry of Medlog Holding Italia into the company’s ownership structure.
The capital increase was subscribed by the Città Metropolitana di Bologna (Metropolitan City of Bologna), the Camera di Commercio Industria Artigianato e Agricoltura di Bologna (Bologna Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Crafts and Agriculture) and Mercitalia Rail, together with the new shareholder. Medlog Holding Italia has long been one of the main customers of the Bologna rail hub for maritime intermodal transport, explained Stefano Caliandro, chairman of Interporto Bologna, who described the operator’s entry as a factor that enhances the company’s industrial development. Caliandro framed the transaction within the path launched by the renewed Board of Directors, in office since 2025, which has focused on an investment plan and capital strengthening to consolidate Interporto Bologna’s role as a leading logistics and rail platform at national and international level. The chairman stressed that the partnership with Gruppo FS is now joined by cooperation with Medlog Holding Italia and its group in supporting rail freight traffic targets and the development of intermodality.
Work is also continuing on the expansion of the rail terminal, which will increase the platform by 115,000 square metres through the construction of new 750-metre tracks and new gantry cranes. The works are expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Economically, the 2025 financial year closed with production value of €12,437,799, still at a loss: a result linked to the fact that the investments made have not yet produced their effects, in a context of declining rail freight transport which, in Italy and Europe, fell by 8% over the 2022-2025 three-year period.
In 2025, trains passing through the Interporto covered a total of 1.2 million kilometres, removing 60,700 lorries from the road and generating savings of 17,214 tonnes of CO2 thanks to rail transport. The hub currently hosts 130 established companies and provides work for more than 6,500 people. Since 2021, Interporto Bologna has drawn up a sustainability report based on ESG principles and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In 2023, it launched actions linked to 9 of the 17 sustainable development goals of the UN 2030 Agenda. Since 2022, it has signed the Carta metropolitana per la logistica etica (Metropolitan Charter for Ethical Logistics), which has led to a protocol with the Prefettura (Prefecture), the opening of a school dedicated to workers’ health and safety and the activation of new services for the hub community, including a medical centre, a sports centre and a Caritas listening point.
