The Board of Directors of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane met on 13 July 2026 under the chairmanship of Tommaso Tanzilli and appointed Gianpiero Strisciuglio as chief executive officer of the group, also assigning him the role of general manager. The powers and delegated responsibilities granted to the new head of the group remain in line with those of the previous management, while the chairman retains responsibility for internal control and institutional representation.
The appointment came after the shareholders’ meeting held on the morning of the same day, which elected the new Board of Directors for the 2026-2028 three-year term. In addition to Tanzilli, appointed chairman, the board includes Strisciuglio himself, Pietro Bracco, Franco Fenoglio, Silvia Marzot, Loredana Ricciotti and Daniela Rota. The shareholders’ meeting invited the new board to appoint Strisciuglio as chief executive officer to succeed Stefano Donnarumma. The appointment was then formalised during the afternoon meeting of the Board of Directors, which also thanked the outgoing board members for their work during the mandate just completed.
A transport engineer from Bari, where he was born on 31 July 1975, Strisciuglio takes over the leadership of the group after a career developed entirely within FS. He graduated with honours in transport engineering from the Politecnico di Bari and completed a second-level master’s degree at the Università Parthenope di Napoli. He has been registered with the Consiglio nazionale degli ingegneri (National Council of Engineers) since 2001 and joined the railway group shortly afterwards.
His professional career took shape at Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, where from 2013 he was responsible for service planning and development, before taking over commercial and network operations management in 2014 for about three years. In April 2022, he became chief executive officer and general manager of Mercitalia Logistics, the parent company of the Logistics hub, and on 19 May 2023 he moved to the helm of Rfi, again as chief executive officer and general manager. He was then appointed chief executive officer and general manager of Trenitalia on 6 March 2025.
Outside the FS group, Strisciuglio chairs Agens, the transport and services confederation agency affiliated with Confindustria, and Cifi, the Collegio degli ingegneri ferroviari italiani (College of Italian Railway Engineers). He has also chaired the supervisory board of TX Logistik and served as chairman and chief executive officer of Autostrada Ferroviaria Alpina, roles that complete a profile also focused on European rail logistics. At the time of his appointment, Strisciuglio also retains the role of chief executive officer and general manager of Trenitalia, where he will have to be replaced in a subsequent round of appointments.
