Since the start of 2026, Rail Cargo Group, part of ÖBB, has doubled weekly services on the TransFER Villach–Desio route, strengthening the rail freight corridor between Austria and Lombardy. The company states that the connection ensures a transit time of around one day between Villach Süd and the Desio area, a logistics hub embedded in the industrial system of Brianza and the Milan metropolitan area. The move responds to growing demand for integrated rail solutions between the Alpine region and northern Italy.
The service is designed to handle a wide range of traffic, from single wagons to full trains, as well as intermodal transport units and containers from 20 to 40 feet. Increasing frequency to two weekly services allows for greater operational regularity and improved planning of flows, particularly for industrial loads requiring short delivery times. The model is based on a fixed timetable structure within the standardised TransFER network, aimed at ensuring reliability across the entire logistics chain. The connection also provides additional services, including first- and last-mile road haulage, transhipment, storage, customs handling and final distribution. This integration makes it possible to configure end-to-end solutions, reducing intermediate steps while maintaining continuity between rail and road networks.
The Villach–Desio route forms part of the wider TransFER Villach–Italy network, which connects the Austrian hub with numerous Italian destinations. From Villach Süd, flows extend to northern and central Italy, with further reach to the south and Sicily. The Austrian terminal acts as a marshalling hub, where single wagons and groups are consolidated into full trains bound for various Italian destinations, strengthening integration with south-eastern European markets. On some routes, frequencies reach up to two or three trains per week, with loading gauges compatible with combined transport along the Tarvisio axis. In this context, the Desio link represents one of the access routes to the Lombardy market, characterised by high industrial density and steady demand for medium-distance logistics services.
The Desio terminal plays a central role in the service configuration. It is one of Rail Cargo Group’s main logistics centres in Italy, alongside San Stino di Livenza, with around 48,000 square metres of warehouse space. The presence of both internal and external rail sidings enables direct integration between rail and road distribution, facilitating loading, unloading and sorting operations. According to the company, the platform can serve the whole of northern Italy for first- and last-mile activities, thanks to its proximity to Lombardy’s main road infrastructure. This allows rail to be used for long-distance transport between Austria and Lombardy, while retaining flexibility in final distribution to regional production hubs.
