The Italian Polizia Stradale has published the results of the first Truck & Bus campaign of 2026, conducted between 9 and 15 February as part of the initiatives coordinated at European level by Roadpol (European Roads Policing Network). The checks targeted heavy vehicles travelling on Italy’s national road network and involved Italian, European and non-EU road haulage operators. Overall, 7,002 trucks and 40 buses were inspected, with 6,388 violations recorded. Officers focused primarily on drivers’ physical and psychological fitness, compliance with speed limits, adherence to regulations governing the transport of dangerous goods and the application of national and European rules regulating road haulage.
Among the offences recorded were 467 violations for exceeding speed limits, 27 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol and 6 for driving under the influence of drugs. Officers also identified 330 violations for failure to use seat belts. A significant share of the offences concerned the organisation of driving work and the technical compliance of vehicles and transport operations. In particular, 1,020 infringements related to tachograph regulations were recorded, along with 730 violations linked to technical deficiencies in vehicles or irregularities in the load and 471 concerning vehicle or transport documentation.
Checks also covered specific categories of goods. During the campaign period, 73 violations were recorded in the handling of dangerous goods and 5 in waste transport. These were accompanied by a further 3,326 offences of other types identified during roadside inspections. The operation also led to immediate enforcement measures against drivers. In total, 583 driving licences were withdrawn and 9,997 penalty points were deducted from driving licences.
