From 18 July, daily opening of the Colle di Tenda
From 18 July, the new Colle di Tenda tunnel will be open every day from 6.00 am to 9.00 pm, with alternating one-way traffic regulated by traffic lights. This decision was made by the Intergovernmental Conference following two weeks of successful trials during which more than 33,000 light vehicles passed through during experimental time windows. The measure marks a step forward in mobility between the Alps and the sea, boosting tourism and the economy in the cross-border areas.
Night closures for the Arlberg Tunnel in September
The Arlberg Tunnel, on Austria’s S16 Arlberg Schnellstraße, will be closed to traffic during the nights from Monday 22 to Friday 26 September 2025, between 8.00 pm and 4.00 am, due to maintenance work. During the closure, vehicles will have to follow the designated detour via the B197 Arlbergstraße, between the S16 junction and the national border at the Arlberg Pass. For the duration of the works, the ban on trailers along the alternative route will be temporarily lifted.
Lineas receives 61 million euros from the Belgian government
Lineas, Belgium’s leading rail operator, will receive a loan of 61 million euros from the state-owned Federal Holding and Investment Company. The private company is facing a critical financial situation and is in urgent need of economic support. The rail operator is at risk of bankruptcy, which may be closer than anticipated. The government aid, channelled through Sfpim, is an attempt to rescue one of the country’s key players in the rail transport sector. Although Lineas operates as a private company, its strategic importance to the national rail system has prompted the state to step in with this emergency funding.
Slovenian rail freight capacity cut by 50 percent
SŽ-TP, the Slovenian national rail operator, has been allocated only 46 slots on the Ljubljana-Koper line, which links the capital with the country’s main port. In a letter, the company stated that this represents a 50 percent cut in capacity, which is already insufficient to meet current demand. The restriction affects rail freight and will remain in place until the end of the year. The Ljubljana-Koper railway line is a strategic route for Slovenian trade, enabling the movement of goods from the capital to the main seaport. Ongoing construction works are causing significant operational constraints for the freight transport sector in the country.
Closure of the A4 in Germany for digital weighing system installation
Germany’s A4 motorway will be completely closed in the direction of Cologne from 10.00 pm on 18 July to 5.00 am on 21 July between the Langerwee and Düren interchanges for preliminary works. Vehicles will be diverted via the A44 towards Düsseldorf and the A61 towards Koblenz. The works are part of a pilot project by Autobahn and the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility, involving the installation of digital weighing systems for lorries. The system is set to be operational from spring 2026 and will include 16 stations, with the first located at the Ruhr-Scholle-Züd service area near Düren. The cost of the digital project amounts to around 2.5 million euros. The A4 was selected for its strategic position along major freight flows from the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam, near the Köln-Eiffeltor container terminal. The system will use weight sensors embedded in the road surface to alert drivers of overloading, followed by automatic checks on a dedicated platform. The aim is to protect roads and bridges from damage caused by overloaded lorries.
