The Italian market for trailers and semi-trailers with a gross weight above 3.5 tonnes confirmed a positive trend in November 2025. According to estimates produced by Unrae’s Study and Statistics Centre based on registration data from the Ministry of Transport, 1,375 units were registered during the month, up 20.4% compared with the 1,142 units recorded in the same month of 2024.
The monthly figure fits into a broader strengthening trend. In the first eleven months of 2025, total registrations of trailers and semi-trailers reached 14,310 units, an increase of 13.9% compared with the 12,562 units recorded in the same period of 2024. In absolute terms, this represents more than 1,700 additional vehicles registered year on year, confirming a phase of structural recovery for the towed vehicles segment.
Unrae underlines that these figures highlight the central role of towed vehicles within the road freight transport supply chain, both in terms of operational capacity and their impact on road safety and the efficiency of the logistics system. Against this backdrop, the association expresses satisfaction with the recent publication of the interministerial Mit-Mef decree governing the allocation of the €590 billion multi-year extraordinary fund intended for the renewal of the freight transport vehicle fleet, as set out in the measure.
According to Unrae, the decree represents a concrete sign of attention towards the sector. As explained by Michele Mastagni, coordinator of Unrae’s trailers, semi-trailers and bodywork group, the measure confirms an approach aimed at supporting the sustainability and modernisation of road transport, while taking on board some of the requests put forward by companies and industry associations.
Unrae reiterates its willingness to work with other sector associations to contribute to a swift and effective implementation of the measures provided for by the fund. The association also calls for a timely definition of the procedures for using the additional resources already allocated for 2025, which are considered essential to ensure continuity of investment and operational certainty for haulage companies.
One of the key issues remains the share of resources allocated to towed vehicles. Unrae points out that in previous incentive windows the segment did not benefit from support proportionate to its real weight within the freight transport system. A recent example is the click day on 17 December, relating to the latest incentive booking window, which made just €3.8 million available for towed vehicles, a level of funding deemed insufficient in relation to market needs.
According to Mastagni, it is essential that, in the allocation of the new extraordinary fund plan, the trailers and semi-trailers segment receives an adequate share based on objective and validated criteria. The aim is to ensure tangible support for companies from the very first year of operation, encouraging the transition towards latest-generation vehicles that are safer and more efficient from an environmental perspective.
