The management of the intermodal terminal at the Interporto-Centro Ingrosso in Pordenone (Italy) has been entrusted to Inrail under a transitional arrangement lasting one year, with the option of a six-month extension, to ensure operational continuity after the end of the contract with Hupac and to support the creation of a new public-private joint venture intended to take over long-term management. The parties signed the contract on 15 January 2026 at the Camera di Commercio di Pordenone-Udine (Pordenone-Udine Chamber of Commerce), and it runs until 14 January 2027, with the possibility of a technical extension should the launch of the new corporate entity be delayed.
The operation involves Inrail as the incoming operator. The company is a private freight rail undertaking with its operational headquarters in Udine and is controlled by the Autobrennero group. Inrail is already active across north-eastern Italy and on transalpine routes. Ownership of the terminal remains with Interporto-Centro Ingrosso di Pordenone, a locally publicly owned company that manages the logistics hub and the city’s wholesale centre. The previous operator, Hupac, concluded its mandate on 31 December 2025, at the end of a contract awarded through a public tender.
The assignment covers the technical and operational management of the intermodal rail terminal, including shunting activities, train berthing, handling of intermodal transport units and coordination with logistics operators and railway undertakings. The decision to proceed with a direct award was driven by the need to identify an operator capable of ensuring the immediate start-up of operations during the transition phase towards the new dedicated company, avoiding any interruption of service. Inrail has stated its intention to work in close cooperation with the interporto and local authorities, also envisaging new hires dedicated to the terminal and the integration of the facility into its national and cross-border network, with the launch of the first rail connections during 2026.
The decision to resort to a bridging management solution was taken in December 2025, when the board of directors of Interporto-Centro Ingrosso formally approved the approach ahead of the expiry of the contract with Hupac. The signing in January 2026 marks the start of a phase presented publicly as an intermediate step towards a more stable arrangement, while the process to establish the public-private joint venture expected to assume full management of the terminal is planned to take place between 2026 and early 2027.
The intermodal terminal is located within the Interporto-Centro Ingrosso di Pordenone, a logistics platform serving north-eastern Italy and linking the industrial districts of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto with the ports of the Upper Adriatic and European rail corridors towards northern Europe. In 2025, the facility underwent infrastructure upgrades, including new tracks and the introduction of digital systems for traffic management, aimed at increasing capacity and reliability.
