Gts Rail has renewed its partnership with Siemens Mobility by signing a contract for the supply of five new Vectron MS multisystem locomotives. The agreement consolidates a relationship that began in 2020 and marks another step forward in the development of the railway fleet of Gts Holding, one of Italy’s leading rail freight operators. The company, which currently runs more than 140 trains a week, owns the country’s largest private fleet and ranks among the top three national operators by traffic volumes.
Under the new contract, Siemens will deliver five locomotives: two already in service and immediately available, two newly built units, and one used by Siemens for technical testing, to be delivered by September 2026. With this investment, Gts Rail’s fleet will reach 53 locomotives, all equipped with advanced technologies designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce maintenance time.
The new Vectron MS locomotives, with a maximum output of 6.4 megawatts and a top speed of 160 kilometres per hour, are designed to operate across multiple electrical systems, making them compatible with different European rail networks. Their modular design allows quick upgrades and reconfiguration, while optimised traction reduces wear and ensures consistent performance. Gts Rail will be able to leverage its safety certifications for Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands, extending operations along major European freight corridors.
From 1 January 2026, seven weekly services will connect Milan and Rotterdam, a key axis for freight traffic between Italy and Northern Europe. The international expansion is accompanied by the growth of Gts Rail’s domestic network, with new rail services on routes such as Verona–Bari, Parma–Bari, Trieste–Padua and Pescara–Verona. In parallel, the company has diversified into new freight segments including steel, gas and polyurethanes, while continuing to strengthen intermodal services, which remain central to its logistics model.
Pierfrancesco De Rossi, CEO of Siemens Mobility Italy, noted that Gts Rail’s confidence in multisystem locomotives reflects a shared vision of a competitive and sustainable rail transport sector. Pasquale Todisco, CEO of Gts Rail, highlighted that the new investment strengthens the company’s European presence, enhances customer service and supports the growth of intermodal freight.
