The Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia (Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government) has authorised a €7 million capital increase for Friulia, the regional financial company, which will use the resources to strengthen two indirect holdings considered strategic for logistics and for the internationalisation of local businesses: Interporto Trieste, which will receive €2 million, and Finest, which will receive the remaining €5 million. The measure does not translate into a direct increase in Interporto Trieste’s share capital, but provides Friulia with resources that the financial company may then deploy in its investee companies. The timing and technical instruments for the subsequent corporate transactions have not yet been disclosed. The measure is included in amendments to the 2026-2028 budget adjustment package, an overall €1.07 billion package discussed by the Consiglio regionale (Regional Council) at its sittings on 21, 22, 23 and 24 July 2026 and approved by a majority, with the opposition abstaining and Furio Honsell voting against.
Interporto Trieste manages the Fernetti intermodal logistics infrastructure, a hub on the European Adriatic-Baltic and Mediterranean corridors that also includes the FreeEste area in Bagnoli della Rosandra. The company’s share capital, amounting to around €25.6 million, is held by Friulia (35.06%), the Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico Orientale (Eastern Adriatic Sea Port System Authority) (20%), Duisburger Hafen (15.73%), the Camera di commercio Venezia Giulia (Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce) (14.76%), the Comune di Trieste (Municipality of Trieste) (11.94%) and the Comune di Monrupino (Municipality of Monrupino) (2.51%). The board of directors, in office until the approval of the 2026 financial statements, is chaired by Paolo Privileggio. At the shareholders’ meeting on 19 June, shareholders approved the 2025 financial statements, which closed with pre-tax profit of €1.8 million and production value of €14 million: the best results ever achieved by the company, delivered through the handling of 395,000 tonnes of goods and 22,085 TEU, and the organisation of 275 intermodal trains.
Finest has operated for more than 25 years as an equity partner for international growth for companies in the North East, with investments in 44 countries across Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Russia, CIS countries and the Mediterranean area. Barbara Zilli, regional councillor for finance, said the intervention was driven by the need to strengthen "strategic indirect companies, with particular reference to Interporto Trieste and Finest". This is not the first time Friulia has intervened in the capital of the intermodal hub company: in 2018 the financial company took part, with around €2 million, in a capital increase linked to the merger with Interporto di Cervignano, while in more recent years shareholders have approved further increases, including one worth €6 million, aimed at developing intermodality and upgrading logistics infrastructure.
