The Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Settentrionale (Northern Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority) completed the logistics platform for frozen food products on 30 September 2026 at the Interporto Toscano Amerigo Vespucci logistics hub in Guasticce, in the municipality of Collesalvetti. The building adds more than 12,000 cubic metres of cold-storage capacity to Livorno’s inland logistics area and is the largest project under the Cold Chain Livorno programme, funded through Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The facility remains the property of the Port Authority, which has yet to decide who will operate it. Construction was carried out by a temporary consortium comprising Frangerini Impresa, Intersonda, EuroImpianti and Sie. The project falls under the PNRR measure supporting the development of logistics for the agri-food, fisheries and aquaculture, forestry, floriculture and nursery sectors.
The building measures 60 by 30 metres, covering around 1,800 square metres, beneath a curved roof rising from 7.50 to 19.15 metres. It houses two low-temperature cold rooms measuring 30 by 20 metres, with an average internal height of 11 metres, preceded by a neutral-temperature antechamber measuring approximately 50 by 10 metres. In addition to the refrigeration systems, the contract includes racking for the two cold rooms, designed for pallets handled by automated shuttle or Under Pallet Carrier systems, with two units supplied. A 323 kWp photovoltaic system has been installed on the roof. The Cold Chain Livorno programme also includes the reorganisation of facilities for storing and selling fish in the Darsena Vecchia area inside the port.
The warehouse forms part of the cold chain linking the quay and the inland logistics area. Terminal Darsena Toscana provides more than 900 reefer container plugs, while Livorno Reefer, wholly owned by Compagnia Portuale Livorno, operates along the industrial canal on a total area of 30,000 square metres, including 12,000 square metres of covered space. Around 6,000 square metres are dedicated to fruit and vegetables, while the remaining covered area is used for the logistics of wines and spirits by Hillebrand Gori. Cold Storage Customs Vespucci operates at the logistics hub with around 4,500 square metres dedicated to fresh produce. Its capital is held 40% by Interporto and 60% by three private shareholders: F.lli Colò, Db Group and Ctpr Magagnini. Since January 2026, Livorno Reefer has also managed Csc’s facilities, the first step towards creating a single temperature-controlled platform for fruit, vegetables and exotic produce. Both facilities operate as private customs warehouses, and their integration is intended to reduce energy costs by making more efficient use of the different cold-room capacities. In 2025, the two companies handled around 9,500 refrigerated containers.
Refrigerated container traffic at the port of Livorno grew by 38% in 2025. At Fruit Logistica in Berlin, held in February, the Livorno cluster presented a breakdown showing 28,779 refrigerated containers handled by Terminal Darsena Toscana, 6,850 by Livorno Reefer and 2,500 by Csc, in addition to 140,576 tonnes of palletised fresh goods handled through Livorno Reefer’s facilities.
