The Ministry of Transport, through the Harbour Master’s Office–Coast Guard of Genoa, has approved the start of a trial phase to allow the simultaneous berthing and mooring of two containerships of maximum size at the PSA Genova Pra’ terminal. The authorisation marks an important technical step for Italy’s port sector, enabling for the first time in the country the simultaneous handling of two 400-metre vessels, each with a capacity of 20,000 TEU.
The operation, made possible thanks to the coordination of the port’s technical-nautical services — particularly the Pilots’ Association, Tugboat services and the Gruppo Antichi Ormeggiatori di Genova — was tested with the concurrent mooring of the containerships Cosco Shipping Taurus and Evelyn Maersk. These two vessels, among the largest in the world by cargo capacity, regularly call at the Ligurian port about once a week, though until now berthing operations had always taken place separately.
According to Roberto Ferrari, CEO of PSA Italy, the new operational configuration allows two large vessels to be handled in parallel, eliminating idle time and improving the terminal’s overall efficiency. The goal is to ensure operational continuity for new-generation ships, reducing waiting times at anchorage and optimising quay and handling resources.
