From the fourth quarter of 2025, DKV Mobility’s Box Europe 4G device will be compatible with Switzerland’s forthcoming tolling system and the gradual phase-out of 2G across Europe.
DKV Mobility is set to launch its new 4G-enabled Box Europe in the final quarter of 2025, anticipating the continent’s shift towards next-generation tolling systems. The move comes in response to the planned shutdown of 2G mobile networks already scheduled in several countries. Switzerland, for example, will introduce from 2026 a 4G-based digital tolling system for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Norway aim to discontinue 2G-based tolling services by 2030.
The new device expands DKV Mobility’s EETS (European Electronic Toll Service) offer and will operate in 15 European countries, covering 18 toll domains as well as key bridges and tunnels. Its rollout in the Czech Republic is scheduled for autumn 2025.
Among its technical features are a colour display for quick interaction, direct access to submenus for axle and vehicle weight settings, plug-and-play functionality compatible with existing 2G cables, and the ability to operate independently without a smartphone. The box integrates both DSRC and GNSS technologies to ensure toll payments on short-range and satellite-based systems, receives over-the-air updates, and includes a low-battery warning system.
According to Marco Berardelli, Managing Director of DKV Mobility Italy, 4G provides “a dynamic and reliable solution, ready to adapt to the evolving needs of the European market.” For Jérôme Lejeune, Managing Director of Toll & Refund Services, it represents “a milestone for the future of the European tolling market” and a dependable support for customers across the covered countries.
