On 10 February 2025, confirmation was given that the Frejus railway tunnel will reopen to traffic on 1 April 2025. The announcement was made by French transport minister Philippe Tabarot at the end of the cross-border cooperation committee meeting, attended by Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani, his French counterpart Jean Noël Barrot, the president of the Piedmont region Alberto Cirio, regional transport councillor Marco Gabusi, the mayor of the metropolitan city and of Turin Stefano Lo Russo, the president of the province of Cuneo Luca Robaldo, and the mayor of Cuneo Patrizia Manassero.
At the end of the meeting, the French minister also confirmed that the Tenda road tunnel will reopen in June, alongside the inauguration of the second bore of the Frejus road tunnel. Regarding the Tenda tunnel, the regional president specified that a detailed construction schedule will be released on 13 February, providing final confirmation of the June reopening date. Discussions also covered the Maddalena pass, where the region has requested clear and shared regulations from the French authorities concerning restrictions on industrial vehicles.
Meanwhile, the Piedmont region has allocated one million euros as an initial support measure for commercial and tourism activities in the Vermenagna Valley, which has been affected by the closure of the Tenda tunnel. It should be noted that the tunnel, and consequently the border crossing with France, has been closed to traffic since 2020 due to severe weather damage to the old tunnel, which has also delayed work on the new one.
